Excalibur Round Debuts in Afghanistan

KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan (Army News Service, March 10, 2008) -Soldiers fired the first 155mm GPS-guided Excalibur artillery round in Afghanistan Feb. 25.

The GPS-guided Excalibur round was given the proper grid coordinate to seek out and destroy a target using the Enhanced Portable Inductive Artillery Fuse Setter by placing the system on the tip of the round and sending a digital message containing the coordinate for the round to find.

Global Hawk marks 10-year anniversary

3/5/2008 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFPN) -- A Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle landed after an eight-hour mission Feb. 28 that marked 10 years since base officials witnessed its first flight at Edwards Air Force Base.

On that first flight, the aircraft flew for one hour at an altitude of 32,000 feet, and today the Global Hawk has logged more than 20,000 flight hours including 15,000 hours flown in support of the war on terrorism.

3/5/2008 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. (AFPN) -- The commander of Air Force Materiel Command, which is responsible for delivering war-winning capabilities to the rest of the Air Force, said during a visit to Air University here that Air Force officials must develop and buy new aircraft or risk the service becoming irrelevant.

The Air Force must be careful not to be outclassed in the next war, said Gen. Bruce Carlson shortly after speaking with Air War College and Squadron Officer School students Feb. 27 about the importance of recapitalizing the Air Force's aging fleet to maintain air dominance.

Medal of Honor Recipient Inducted Into Pentagon's Hall of Heroes

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, March 4, 2008) – Calling him a “mentor, teacher and legend,” President George W. Bush awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously March 3 to Master Sgt. Woodrow “Woody” Wilson Keeble.

Keeble is the first full-blooded Sioux Indian to be awarded the Medal of Honor and the 121st member of the National Guard to be awarded the nation’s highest military award for valor, according to National Guard Educational Foundation records.

It was President Bush’s ninth Medal of Honor ceremony – but he said this one was different.

2/28/2008 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN)  -- Air Force leaders named the commander of Air University as the future leader of Air Education and Training Command Feb. 28.

President George W. Bush has nominated Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lorenz for appointment to the grade of general and assignment as commander of AETC, which is responsible for the free world's largest training system.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Army News Service, Feb. 28, 2008) -- The Army's new field manual for operations, FM 3-0, brings the first major update of Army capstone doctrine since the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

"This change in operational doctrine is designed to ensure that our Soldiers have the very best tools, training and leadership they need to succeed," said Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, the commanding general of the United States Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala (Army News Service, Feb. 20, 2008) -- Rosebud Sioux tribal leaders joined the Army Feb. 5 to celebrate the proud name for a new Army helicopter - the UH-72A Lakota.

The Army's Utility Helicopter Project Office marked inception of the new Lakota helicopter fleet with a ceremony at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., attended by Rosebud Sioux tribal council president Rodney Bordeaux, his chief of staff and the tribe's chief, among others.

CAMP TAJI, Iraq (Army News Service, Feb. 19, 2008) - Technicians are modifying M1-A2 Abrams tanks here to make them more safer and more precision-effective in the dense, urban Baghdad environment.

For Multi-National Division-Baghdad tankers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division these equipment modifications are taking place in the form of the Tank Urban Survival Kit which is being added to their M1-A2 Abrams tanks.

CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa. (Army News Service, Feb. 13, 2008) -- "I'm almost glad when I see a robot with his arm blown off, because I know that a $500 part is a lot easier to repair than the arm of a Soldier," said Dave Kowachek, a mechanical engineer at Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center.

TARDEC was one of the companies at the U.S. Army War College Robotics Day Feb. 12. The event was an opportunity for future leaders to see emerging technology.
