5/28/2009 - JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq (AFNS)  -- Airmen from the 532nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron jumped in and out of helicopters from the Army C Company, 1-137th Aviation Regiment during air-assault training here May 23.

"The purpose of air-assault training is to add another option of infiltrating a targeted area," said Master Sgt. Jose Zuniga, 532nd ESFS quick reaction force NCO in charge.

PEO Soldier unveils lighter, more lethal weapons systems

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 21, 2009) – Two weapons in development are expected to be more precision-oriented, lighter and lethal: the laser-sighted XM-25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System and the Lightweight .50-Caliber Machine Gun.

The XM-25 will undergo field-testing this summer while the LW50MG is already being tested by Soldiers.

Program Executive Office Soldier at Fort Belvoir, Va., opened its doors earlier this month to give the media a look at the two weapons and other new gear in development that will lighten a Soldier’s load yet improve survivability, lethality and comfort.

New strategy treats Afghanistan, Pakistan as integrated theater

WASHINGTON (May 20, 2009) - The new strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan treats the area as an integrated theater of operations, the Defense Department's policy chief said today.

Michele Flournoy, undersecretary of defense for policy, spoke of the Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy, dangers from Iran and detainees during a wide-ranging interview with the Defense Writers' Group.

British and Americans partner to build capacity in Rwanda

VICENZA, Italy (May 8, 2009) -- Soldiers from U.S. Army Africa continue to build noncommissioned officer capacity in Rwanda through a partnership effort with British counterparts.

During a recent visit to Rwanda, senior U.S. Army Africa NCOs met with British and Rwandan officers to prepare for an upcoming assignment to mentor Rwandan NCOs on leadership.

Army destroys 60 percent of U.S. chemical weapons

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (Army News Service, April 28, 2009) - U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency officials announced today the destruction of 60 percent of the U.S.-declared stockpile under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

This milestone was achieved April 25. CMA reached the 50-percent milestone in December 2007 and is poised to destroy its two-millionth munition in the coming months, officials said.

WWII veteran receives Bronze Star after 65 years

Pfc. Clarence Wallaert was shot in the hip by a German sniper while fighting against the German Winter Line in Italy Dec. 30, 1943. Wallaert bandaged his own wound and provided 12 hours of automatic rifle support for his Army comrades advancing into the Liri Valley-the "gateway to Rome."

Bronze Star awarded to Vietnam veteran

More than 38 years after his actions during the Vietnam War, retired Master Sgt. Marvin L. Caldwell received the Army's fourth highest honor, the Bronze Star medal, during a ceremony at Virginia Tech on April 4.
