Helicopter battalion to relocate from Korea to U.S.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Nov. 17, 2008) -- The 1-2 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion in Korea will relocate to Fort Carson, Colo., in March and then train for deployment to Iraq in the fall of 2009, Army officials announced Monday morning.

The battalion includes 24 Apache helicopters and about 500 Soldiers. The battalion's associated Aviation Intermediate Maintenance, or AVIM structure, will also move from Korea to Fort Carson, officials said.

FCS Active Protection System in 'Top 50' inventions

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Nov. 17, 2008) -- The Army's new Active Protection System, which is designed to safeguard Soldiers and vehicles from incoming fire, has been named one of the best inventions of 2008 by Time magazine.

"Think of [it] as Star Wars for Soldiers," said Time magazine in its Nov. 10 edition. The APS "will automatically detect an incoming round and then launch a missile to destroy it, all within a split second."

First female four-star general promoted

FORT BELVOIR, Va. – Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody became the first female four-star general in U.S. military history in a Pentagon ceremony and later assumed command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command from outgoing commander, Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin at Fort Belvoir Friday.

11/13/2008 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS)  -- A wounded NCO spoke to 300 Airmen, retirees, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce officials and members of the Alamo Chapter of the Air Force Association Nov. 3 at the Randolph Air Force Base Enlisted Club.

The AFA-sponsored "Combat Breakfast" hosted Staff Sgt. Christopher Slaydon and 21 other wounded warriors recovering from injuries at the Brooke Army Medical Center's Center for the Intrepid at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

The gathering was part of the national "Celebrate America's Military Week'' that led into Veterans Day.

ARLINGTON, Va. (Army News Service, Nov. 13, 2008) -- Army and industry leaders gathered Thursday to exchange information about the latest advances in small-arms technology.

The Army released a Request for Information Aug. 22 asking the weapons industry to see the latest, state-of-the-art, small-arms technology. Industry representatives brought examples of that technology to an invitation-only industry day here to show Secretary of the Army Pete Geren and representatives of the Army's Program Executive Office-Soldier.

11/6/2008 - WASHINGTON (AFNS)  -- The Air Force salutes the Marine Corps on its 233nd birthday Nov. 10.

Originally founded on Nov. 10, 1775, the Marine Corps was composed mainly of infantrymen serving aboard Navy ships. They were primarily responsible for the security of the ship, offensive and defensive boarding parties. They also helped protect the ship's officers from mutiny.

Casey Jr. and his wife, Sheila, to Fort Monmouth Wednesday, the Army's senior-ranking general officer talked to Fort Monmouth leaders, its workforce and future officers about the Army's four imperatives to "restore balance" now and for the future: Sustain, Prepare, Reset and Transform.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Oct. 29, 2008) -- The Army announced today the awarding of three contracts for technology development on the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.

Together, the three contracts are worth a combined total of approximately $166 million. They have been awarded to: BAE Systems Land & Armament Systems – Ground Systems Division, Santa Clara, Calif.; General Tactical Vehicles (A Joint Venture of General Dynamics Land Systems, Inc. and AM General, LLC), Sterling Heights, Mich.; and Lockheed Martin Systems Integration – Owego; Owego, N.Y.

Two U.S. officers receive British honors

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Oct. 29, 2008) -- The award "Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" was bestowed on two U.S. Army lieutenant colonels during a ceremony at the British Embassy Oct. 29.

Lt. Col. Jordan Chroman, who currently serves with the Army's Chief of Legislative Liaison, and Lt. Col. Sven C. Erichsen of the G-3/5/7 Force Management Office became honorary OBEs when British ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald presented the awards. Both U.S. officers had served as exchange officers in the United Kingdom, and the awards were presented for their contributions to the British military.

New law allows salutes in civvies during anthem

10/31/2008 - WASHINGTON (AFNS)  -- Veterans and servicemembers not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect in October.

"The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation's armed forces," said Dr. James B. Peake, secretary of Veterans Affairs. "This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation's flag."
