Ike Sailors take part in Astronomical Reenlistment

USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors from the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike) (CVN 69) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 participated in a historic reenlistment ceremony of astronomical proportions. Astronaut and Capt. Michael Lopez-Alegria, commander of the International Space Station (ISS), presided over the ceremony from space Jan. 29, via video teleconference (VTC), along with astronaut and Cmdr. Suni Williams, flight engineer.

1/24/2007 - ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. (AFNEWS) -- The 28th Bomb Wing received its first B-1B Lancer on Jan. 21, 1987. Over the course of its 20 years of service with the wing, the aircraft and its mission have changed significantly.

The B-1B has roots in the 1970s, when it became obvious that winning the Cold War required stepping up technology. Originally, Rockwell International won the bid to build four prototype aircraft. The Air Force wanted a fast jet that could cruise efficiently at subsonic speeds and at speeds as high as Mach 2.2, with the additional capability of low-altitude, near sonic capability. The result was the B-1A, which made its maiden flight in December 1974. President Jimmy Carter cancelled the program in 1977.

Air Force proposes adding 23 F-15s, F-16s at Nellis

1/25/2007 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFNEWS) -- The Air Force is proposing to base 23 additional F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons here and to add about 520 people as a result of changes mandated by the recent Base Realignment and Closure process.

Under the proposed action, the 64th Aggressor Squadron would receive five F-16 aircraft and the 65th Aggressor Squadron would receive 18 F-15s in fiscal years 2007, 2010 and 2011.

Navy Approves Spot Promotion of Naval Special Warfare Officers

CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Sixteen Naval Special Warfare (NSW) lieutenants have been approved for promotion to the grade of lieutenant commander in the first ever, SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) spot promotions in U.S. Navy history. Subject to confirmation by the Senate, the promotions highlight the effort the Navy is taking to support one of its cornerstone communities in the fight against terrorism.

12/21/2006 - HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii (AFPN) -- Another airpower milestone was reached Dec. 20 with the completion of the first C-17 Globemaster III airdrop mission that delivered about 70,000 pounds of supplies to the South Pole.
