10/3/2008 - BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (AFNS)  -- Airmen and Soldiers here took integration one step further with rotary wing aviation operations in Afghanistan.

While the Army AH-64 Apaches and Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawks have flown medical evacuation missions together for some time now in Afghanistan, on Sept. 25 they flew their first joint combat search and rescue training mission.

FORT LEWIS, Wash. - It was so dark in that area of Iraq the night of April 26, 2008, Spc. Joe Gibson wasn't certain what he had just stepped on as he walked through the chest-high grass between a series of two-foot-deep irrigation ditches.

Gibson, a mortarman with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, took two more steps forward and then turned around to investigate.

YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz. (Army News Service, Sep. 23, 2008) -- The Future Combat Systems program successfully fired the first artillery projectile from the manned ground vehicle non-line-of-sight cannon prototype.

The successful firing of the projectile is a milestone for the program, said Lt. Col. Robert McVay, Army product manager for NLOS-C.

Odierno assumes command of coalition forces in Iraq

CAMP VICTORY, Iraq, (Sept. 16, 2008) - Gen. Raymond T. Odierno assumed command of Multi-National Force-Iraq from Army Gen. David H. Petraeus during a ceremony at al Faw Palace in Baghdad today.

The change of command occurs after incredible progress in the country, said Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who traveled to Baghdad to participate in the ceremony.

Sky Soldier awarded Distinguished Service Cross

VICENZA, Italy -- Staff Sgt. Erich Phillips, mortar platoon sergeant for Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, also known as "The Rock," was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross Sept. 15, 2008, in Vicenza, Italy for his actions Aug. 22, 2007, at Ranch House in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan.

The DSC is the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the Army, and only the fifth awarded to a servicemember during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Army activating its second Maneuver Enhancement Brigade

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Army News Service, Sept. 18, 2008) - A new type of deployable brigade is activating at Fort Leonard Wood in October.

The concept for the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade - a support unit that can control a sector of the battlefield - was created at the Maneuver Support Center at Fort Leonard Wood.

Picatinny's GPS-guided Excalibur artillery round deemed 'amazingly accurate' by troops

From taking out top al-Qaida operatives to safely firing within 50 meters of dismounted infantrymen, the Picatinny Excalibur projectile is already paying dividends a year after its initial fielding to Soldiers.

When Excalibur first debuted in Iraq in May 2007, it became the Army's first all-weather, precision-guided artillery round.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Sept. 11, 2008) -- President George W. Bush dedicated the Pentagon Memorial Sept. 11, saying the nation will never forget the sacrifice and heroism there following the terrorist attack seven years ago.

"Pentagon employees ran into smoke-filled rooms to guide their friends to safety," Bush said.
"One of the worst days in America's history saw some of the bravest acts in America's history."

Army celebrates century of military aviation

ARLINGTON, Va. (Army News Service, Sep. 8, 2008) -- The Army kicked off a celebration recognizing 100 years of military aviation during a Sept. 6 ceremony at Fort Myer, Va.

Despite heavy rains and flooded streets due to Tropical Storm Hanna, hundreds turned out to Conmy Hall to see the first public starting of the engine on a replica of the 1908 Wright Model A. The original of that aircraft flew Sept. 3, 1908 at Fort Myer. That flight was the first in a series that led to a $30,000 Army contract awarded to the Wright brothers in July 1909 for the first military airplane.
