WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Oct. 27, 2009) -- Two new lightweight machine guns, the Land Warrior System and an improved oxygen device for aviators were among equipment displayed Tuesday at the Pentagon.

Officials from Program Executive Office Soldier met with members of the media at the Pentagon to discuss the latest equipment fielded to Soldiers. Four program managers from PEO Soldier talked about advances in weapons, personal gear, and lasers and sights that Soldiers use on the battlefield.

South Korean colonel receives Bronze Star for Afghanistan service

YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- A Republic of Korea Army colonel received the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan during a ceremony here Sept. 24.

Col. Joeng Jang-soo, who commanded South Korean troops in Afghanistan, was presented the medal by 8th U.S. Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Fil Jr.

About 250 U.S. soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 14th Cavalry Squadron, based out of Hawaii, brought 17 of their Stryker combat vehicles and paired with the Indian army's 7th Mechanized Infantry Battalion here, at one of India's premier military training sites.

Army says body armor safe, despite GAO report

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Oct. 16, 2009) -- Testing anomalies cited in an Oct. 16 Government Accountability Office report on body armor do not mean the plates are unsafe, said Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller, program executive officer for the organization that fields new equipment to Soldiers.

World's premier snipers converge on Fort Benning

More than 30 two-man teams from around the globe put that battle cry to the test - minus any lethality in this instance - on Fort Benning's ranges during the ninth annual U.S. Army International Sniper Competition, which began Oct. 15 and ended Thursday.

Army to field new plate-carrier vest

FORT BELVOIR, Va. (Army News Service, Oct. 15, 2009) -- The Army is poised to introduce a plate-carrier vest to provide Soldiers more lightweight gear in the challenging operational environments of Afghanistan.

An $18.6 million contract for 57,000 plate carriers was awarded Oct. 8, to KDH Defense Systems. The fielding schedule calls for the first plate carriers to be delivered to the Army in December after testing and be fielded to Soldiers soon thereafter. Deliveries under the contract are to be completed in March 2010.
