Army to Equip Brigade with 'Land Warrior'

FORT BELVOIR, Va. (Army News Service, May 28, 2008) - As Land Warrior reaches its first anniversary in combat, the Army is seeking to equip an entire brigade combat team with the high-tech system which increases mission speed and effectiveness and decreases risks to the warfighter.

The Army has approved an Operational Needs Statement to field the Land Warrior system to the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, in 2009.

During the past year, Soldiers with the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment have faced the challenges of asymmetric warfare in Iraq using Land Warrior, and the battalion's success has prompted others to ask for the system. The 4-9 Infantry is part of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division from Fort Lewis, Wash.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Army News Service, May. 27, 2008) -- The Army's transformation efforts signal change for the service's trained communications experts.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Clark, Command Sergeant Major of the Signal Regiment, discussed some of those changes during a forum for deployed Soldiers here May 17. He told the gathered Soldiers he was proud of their service, letting them know they were part of a very select few group of Americans that serve.

Second OIF Soldier to Receive Posthumous Medal of Honor

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 23, 2008) - President Bush has announced that Spc. Ross McGinnis will posthumously be awarded the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony June 2, two weeks shy of what would have been his 21st birthday.

McGinnis will be just the second U.S. Soldier to receive the medal for actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom and a special Web site dedicated to his heroics has been created by the Soldiers Media Center at www.army.mil/medalofhonor/McGinnis. The site includes a profile on the 1st Infantry Division Soldier, battlescape, background on the medal, video news reports and a number of other resources.

Present, Future Weapons Displayed on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 23, 2008) - Some of the Army's most high-tech future weapons were recently on display on Capitol Hill as part of the "Empowering Soldiers Through High Technology" exhibit sponsored by the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology.

Last week, Congressmen got a sneak peak at the future of Soldiers' personal weapons, including the M-26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System and the XM-25 Individual Airburst Weapon System.

U.S. Sends Relief Supplies to China

WASHINGTON (AFPS, May 18, 2008) - The U.S. military has responded to Chinese requests, delivering critically needed relief supplies to the earthquake-stricken Sichuan province.

More than 32,000 people are known dead from the 7.9 quake that hit May 12. About 250,000 are hurt, according to Chinese government releases. Thousands remain missing and are feared dead under the rubble.

WASHINGTON (AFPS, May 15, 2008 - A total of eight Air Force C-130s have delivered supplies to Burma as part of the U.S. relief effort following Cyclone Nargis, a senior military official said yesterday.

Five C-130 Hercules transports delivered water, blankets, rations, mosquito netting and plastic sheeting yesterday. "We have to have permission every time we go in," the official, speaking on background, said. "U.S. officials have a verbal OK to bring in five more planeloads of relief supplies today, he added.

Best Sappers Compete in Grueling Challenge

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Army News Service, May 15, 2008) -- After 52 hours of engineer challenges requiring muscle-wrenching, rain-soaked exertion, little or no sleep and miles of running, Capt. Jason Winkelmann and 2nd Lt. Joel Groves, both from the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas, placed first May 8 in the 2008 Best Sapper Competition.

The Best Sapper Competition is the Engineer Regiment's equivalent to the Best Ranger Competition; identifying elite Soldiers in combat engineer military occupation specialties.

From more than a dozen Army units, 25 two-man teams arrived on Fort Leonard Wood to compete for the title of Best Sappers, May 6-8, waging war on challenge after challenge and testing their abilities as engineers and Soldiers.

Company-grade Leaders Receive MacArthur Awards

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Army News Service, May 14, 2008) - Twenty-eight commissioned and warrant officers from the active Army, Army Reserve and the National Guard received the 2008 General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award during a ceremony at the Pentagon today.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. presented the awards and praised the Soldiers for their accomplishments.

"The common thread that binds Soldiers together, that causes men and women to do extraordinary things, is the kind of leadership we celebrate here today," Casey said.

The Soldiers being honored commanded multiple companies in combat, and trained Iraqis in war, law, governance and economics, he said.
