Typhoon Reaches New Capability Milestone

The Eurofighter Typhoon has passed another milestone on its journey to become a fully operational Royal Air Force (RAF) multi-role combat aircraft, with the first firings of Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM) from a front line squadron aircraft.

Four ASRAAM were successfully launched by Typhoon F2s of No 3 (Fighter) Sqn based at RAF Coningsby, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, at the Aberporth weapons range in Cardigan Bay, Wales, during the week 26 February to 02 March 2007.

Ronald Reagan Strike Group Arrives in Hong Kong for Port Visit

HONG KONG (NNS) -- The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Carrier Strike Group (RRSG) arrived in Hong Kong March 7 for a scheduled port visit, offering Sailors a chance to participate in cultural exchanges, goodwill generating activities and build friendships.

While in Hong Kong, 250 crew members will take part in 10 community relations projects March 8–9, to include assisting at orphanages and rehabilitation centers as well as working at a dog rescue facility.

Raptor, precision strike bomb integration testing begins

3/7/2007 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFNEWS) -- The 411th Flight Test Squadron began integration testing of the F-22A Raptor and the GBU-39/B Small-Diameter Bomb here in February.

The weapon is a low-cost, stand-off, next generation precision strike weapon, capable of flying autonomously.

The bomb is guided by an inertial navigation system with global positioning system updates, said Jeff Randolph, flight test engineer for The Boeing Company's Small Diameter Bomb program here.

The Army is now fielding 430,000 new helmet pads, officially referred to as Nape Pads that are designed to better protect Soldiers' neck areas from ballistic fragmentation, to Soldiers serving in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- The USS John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSSG) entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO) Feb.19 to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in regional waters, as well as to provide support for ground forces operating in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Led by Rear Adm. Kevin Quinn, Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, the strike group includes the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON)21, the guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), guided-missile destroyers USS O’Kane (DDG 77) and USS Preble (DDG 88), and the fast combat-support ship USNS Bridge (T-AOE 10). More than 6,500 Sailors and Marines are assigned to JCSSG.

First Sea Lord Responds to Reports Over 'Navy Cuts'

Royal Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sir Jonathon Band has responded to media reports about the funding of the Royal Navy.

In a statement issued on 16 February 2007 Admiral Band, who is professional head of the Royal Navy, explained:
"I do not think, and have not said, that the Royal Navy needs a £1bn-a-year extra to do its job or to keep ships at sea. Today’s Royal Navy is funded to do what is asked of it – not least thanks to a current investment programme of £14bn, and the delivery of 28 new ships in the last decade alone.

F-22s make mark at Red Flag

2/15/2007 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFNEWS)  -- The F-22 Raptor flew in its first Red Flag exercise that started Feb. 3 here, showcasing its stealth, super cruise and other advantages absent in legacy fighters.

Pilots from the 94th Fighter Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Va., are flying F-22s against Red Flag aggressors, with pilots from the Royal Australian Air Force of Australia, and the Royal Air Force of England. 

The 94th FS deployed 14 Raptors and 197 Airmen to participate in the Red Flag exercise. Including the F-22s, more than 200 aircraft are participating. Among the foreign aircraft involved are the RAF's GR-4 Tornados and RAAF's F-111 Aardvark. In addition, the F-22s are flying with the B-2 Spirit, F-117 Nighthawk, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon and more.

Combat camera videographer receives Purple Heart

2/15/2007 - BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFNEWS) -- Within an hour of waking up in the Air Force Theater Hospital on the morning of Feb. 11, Staff Sgt. Kathryn Robinson was presented with the Purple Heart.

Sergeant Robinson, a videographer assigned to the 4th Combat Camera Squadron in March Air Reserve Base, Calif. , was shot once in the left forearm and on the tip of her right thumb.

The day prior, the 13-year service member was on a cordon and search mission with U.S. and Iraqi Army soldiers near Baqubah when the team took small arms fire.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Feb. 2, 2006) - A new handbook on how Soldiers can survive their first 100 days in Iraq is now available at https://call2.army.mil/new/toc.asp?document=2393.

"Soldier Handbook: Surviving Iraq," was developed due to the increased casualty rate during the first 100 days of a unit's deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according Col. Steven Mains, director of the Center for Army Lessons Learned at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
