Navy to Comission New Missile Guided Destroyer Kidd

Special from the Department of Defense WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will commission the newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, the USS Kidd (DDG 100), June 9 in Galveston, Texas.

Designated hull number DDG 100, the new destroyer honors Medal of Honor recipient Rear Adm. Isaac Campbell Kidd Sr.

Joint forces combine for Red Flag-Alaska exercise

6/1/2007 - EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (AFPN) -- More than 1,400 military members from the United States, Singapore and Australia have converged on Alaska to sharpen their collective warfighting edge in Red Flag-Alaska 07-2, which runs from May 31 to June 15.

Red Flag-Alaska, a series of Pacific Air Forces commander-directed field training exercises for U.S. forces and allies, provides joint offensive counter-air, interdiction, close air support and large-force employment training in a simulated combat environment.

Army's Newest Modular Combat Team Makes Mark in Iraq

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 31, 2007) - In its first deployment to Iraq, one of the Army's newest modular light infantry brigade combat teams is making its mark under the president's troop plus-up plan, the brigade's top officer said in a May 25 briefing to Pentagon reporters.

The 1st Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team from Fort Riley, Kan., is deployed as part of the troop plus-up to the east and west Rashid security districts in the Multinational Division Baghdad area. It is partnered with the 2nd Infantry Division's 3rd Stryker Brigade from Fort Lewis, Wash., and three Iraqi security force brigades. Together, the troops are clearing an area about 58 square miles, roughly the size of San Francisco, home to about 700,000 Iraqis.

FORT HOOD, Texas (Army News Service, May 25, 2007) - Two teams from the Army Operational Test Command here traveled to Fort Campbell, Ky., and Barstow, Calif., to test two new helicopters.
 
At Fort Campbell, a test team of Soldiers, Army Civilians and Contractors linked up with local Army pilots to perform more than 60 hours of flight tests on the Army's CH-47F Chinook, a cargo helicopter recognizable by its long fuselage and twin tandem rotors.

Army Ranger Named One of 'Time' Magazine's Most Influential People

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 18, 2007) - Among the ranks of Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt, the Pope and even Osama bin Laden stands Army ranger and combat veteran Capt. Timothy Gittins.

"Time" magazine has put Capt. Gittins on its annual list of the world's most influential people this month. Appearing in the May 14 issue, Capt. Gittins is described as "an apt symbol of the heroism that the U.S.'s pair of lengthening wars have demanded of the roughly 1 million men and women who have fought them."
